Safety advice for railfans

Railfans play an important role in celebrating, documenting and preserving the rich history of the New Zealand rail network.

Their passion contributes to the community, keeps the legacy alive, and helps share the excitement of rail with future generations.

Staying safe while chasing trains

Rail enthusiasts are known for being among the most respectful and knowledgeable trackside observers.

Here’s how to keep it that way:

  • Choose safe locations and always stay a minimum of 8m from the track.
  • Always expect trains; trains can appear at any time, from either direction.
  • Do not trespass on private land or railway property. This includes railway tracks, tunnels, bridges and yards.
  • If taking photos from public roads, make sure you stop where it is safe.
  • On platforms, stand well back from the platform edge (behind the yellow line if there is one).
  • Listen to instructions from excursion staff, and be respectful.

Railway tracks and the land around them are private, operational infrastructure.

Entering them without permission is trespassing under the Railways Act 2005, and fines can reach up to $10,000.

Even if the track looks unused or quiet, it is still illegal to enter.

Railfans influence other railfans. By setting the example, you help protect the entire community.

A minimum of 8 metres from the tracks is the safest place to take photos
